Ice Cold

We have below normal temperatures here in RI and have had winds and precips since December began, so today was my first outside ride this week! I lasted for 22.08 miles. I did a loop past a couple of the beaches and then over to the rec area field for a lap around that. My tires were inflated for pavement, so riding over the bumpy, frozen ground was quite an experience and had me clenching my teeth and struggling to keep my grip on the handlebar with my cold fingers.

See the ice in the pic? Brrr...

I'm working on getting some winter gear and will make a post about it soon.

I have to face the fact that some days I'm just going to have to get on the trainer. I did 30 minutes on Tuesday just to remind myself what it was like and it wasn't too bad. I just need to set up a TV screen and fan in front of it.

brrrr, it does look cold. It's been like that over the pond too!! I'm keenly awaiting your post on winter wear, as I've been experimenting with gear too ;) I've solved the cold ears problem, as got a really thin hat to wear under my helmet. I went out today and nearly got blown off my bike, so I was wondering if you minded me asking which sort of trainer you have and how easy it is to set up? I was thinking of getting one of those flat ones, cos each week seems to get colder and windier. Thanks, keep up the good cycling work ;)

belaybunny,

Jeff and I use the Kinetic trainer. It has an excellent 'road feel', but is large and not really transportable. I have also tried ones by CycleOps and Blackburn and thought they were good too. I think it was the Blackburn one that folded for easy storage. Usually the shops here have a few choices set up to try with a shop bike and you can quickly get a sense of which you like best. My priority was to get a quiet one, so I could hear the TV or music over it without having to raise the volume a lot!

I will have the winter gear post ready soon and look forward to continuing to talk about it with you. I'm sure we can get good ideas from each other!

Thanks a lot, Sarah :) We're going to the in-laws soon, and there's thankfully a large bike shop nearby so I'll try a few out, hopefully!! I definately need some overboots and long fingered gloves, cos I was freezing within 5 minutes today.
